he Whistling Duck or Dendrocisne bicolor, owes its name to the calls in the form of an acute whistle that are heard when it feeds, rests or flies.
They measure up to 48cm in length and have brownish-plumage. Their neck has blackish sides and they have yellow-striped flanks and a gray toe and feet. There are mutations in which the base color is more yellow and less cinnamon, as is the case of some specimens existing at Quinta da Sagrada Família.
They feed on grasses they eat by the lakesides or they feed under water when they are submerged. They also eat aquatic plants, aquatic insects, small fish, tadpoles and crustaceans. They dive very easily and remain underwater for a long time.
They can build nests in hollow parts of trees or on vegetation. The female lays 8 to 14 eggs that are hatched by the couple for approximately one month. The ducklings begin to fly after 55 days of life.
