he Golden Pheasant or Chinese Pheasant is native to the forests and the mountainous areas of Western China.
The adult male is 90-105cm long, the tail being two thirds of its total length.
It is unmistakable with its golden crest and rump with its bright red body and orange belly. The male crest has a touch of red at the tip. The upper part is green and the rest of the back is golden yellow. Other characteristics of male plumage are the central feathers of the tail, stained black with cinnamon same as the tip of the tail.
The female is much less exuberant, having duller speckled brown feathers similar to the common pheasant female, usually darker and thinner, with a proportionately longer tail, 60 to 80 cm in length. The female has a yellow face and throat. Both genders have yellow legs and yellow beaks.
The golden pheasant feeds on grains, leaves and invertebrates, but it can also eat fruits, larvae and other types of vegetation. They like to perch in the trees at night but they are not great fliers.
Golden pheasants lay 8 to 12 eggs, incubating them for about 22 to 23 days. The male has a characteristic call during the reproductive season, emitting a metallic sound.
