he Nothern Pintail is a duck of similar size to the Mallard, measuring from 60 to 70 cm in length and weighing between 735 and 1030 grams, although it presents a lighter and slender figure. The Nothern Pintail is of the most characteristic and beautiful ducks in the Portuguese avifauna.

It has a long neck, short and narrow beak and a small chocolate brown head, with along white line, which extends from the neck to the belly. The female has along, pointed tail, a dark gray beak and a short, slender and finely drawn brown plumage.

It feeds on aquatic vegetation, insects and other small animals.

The Northern Pintail nests among vegetation and near water, creating a small hollow on the soil which it fills with feathers and fluff. In the wild it lays 7 to 9 eggs, which incubation lasts 21 to 23days. The ducklings are nidifugal but only start flying around 7 to 8 weeks.
