It is a bird difficult to observe. Quails take flight with great difficulty, in a short and low flight. Their singing is easily identified, being very distinct and unusually strong. Quails are found in nature, at open, flat or slightly undulating landscapes, giving preference to spaces with low and complex vegetation.
The quail feeds on seeds, invertebrates and green plants. The proportions of its diet varies with its developmental state and annual cycles. Newborn babies are predominantly insectivores. After four weeks of living, quails’ diets are identical to that of adults and, fundamentally, granivorous. During the reproductive phase, the consumption of invertebrates, especially by females, increases considerably.
The quail nest is built by vegetation, usually on or near agricultural plots. On average, 10 eggs are laid, with a hatching rate of about 97% and a 2-month survival rate of 40%. Two postures per year are to be expected. In Portugal, the reproductive period is long, with the peak of reproduction occurring between June and August.
